The South African Krugerrand Gold Coin is believed to be one of the most widely owned gold bullion coins in the world. First introduced and minted in 1967, the Krugerrand was designed to encourage people to purchase and own gold.
South African Krugerrand Gold Coin Design – O. Schultz designed the front side of the Krugerrand gold coin. It depicts Paul Kruger, the first President of the South African Republic. The words “SUID-AFRIKA and “SOUTH AFRICA” are printed on the coin. On the reverse side of the coin, a springbok (South African antelope) prances across the South African terrain, as designed by C.L. Steynberg. The date of issue along with the amount and the purity of the gold appears as well. This coin does not carry a face value simply because it is mostly minted for trading outside of South Africa.
South African Krugerrand Gold Coin Minting – Each South African Krugerrand Gold Coin is minted using about 91-2/3 parts gold and 8-1/3 parts copper. One of the world’s largest gold producers is South Africa. The South African mint is well stocked even though it has undergone many changes over the years. It became a subsidiary of the SA Reserve Bank when it was privatized in 1988.
