Loose "Junk" Silver Bags

Loose “Junk” Silver Bags are sometimes referred to as “junk silver,” but this description is misleading. When 90% silver is claimed, this usually refers to pre-1965 circulated silver dimes and quarters. At the time, these were comprised of 90% silver and 10% copper. These coins are often sold in $1,000 bags to reflect face value of the coins. Face value means that regardless of the denomination, a $1,000 bag contains the same amount of silver, usually 715 troy oz.(gross weight of about 800 troy oz., 54.85 lbs). These bags are also available in half-size and quarter-size bags (or $500 and $250 bags). Silver bags may be purchased in coins comprised of 90% or 40% silver.

90% Silver Bags – 90% silver bags are acquired more frequently than 40% silver bags because they contain pre-1965 worn dimes and quarters, in any combination. Prior to 1965, American silver coins were comprised of 90% silver and 10% copper. The $1,000 face value bags of 90% silver weigh around 54-55 lbs. and contain a gross weight of 800 troy oz. The pure silver content for these coins is about 715 troy oz.

40% Silver Bags – 40% silver bags consist of only circulated Kennedy-clad half dollars minted 1965-1970. These coins have an outer layer of 80% silver and 20% copper. They are bonded to an inner core of 20.9% silver and 79.1% copper. Somewhat lighter than 90% bags, these $1,000 face value bags contain about 295 troy oz. of pure silver.
