The French Rooster 20 Franc gold coin is one of the most popular in the line of European gold coins. Each gold coin contains nearly a 5th of an oz. (0.1867) of pure gold. These coins are available in brilliant uncirculated and almost uncirculated conditions.
French Rooster 20 Franc Gold Coin Design – The front side of the French Rooster 20 Franc features the head of the French Third Republic along with the words “REPUBLIQUE FRANCAISE.” The French Third Republic was established after the defeat of Napoleon III in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, and remained in domination until World War II. Currently, France operates under the France Fifth Republic, established by Charles de Gaulle in 1958.
The reverse side of the coin shows a fully plumed rooster along with the words “LIBERTE-EGALITE-FRATERNITE,” the denomination (20 Fcs), and the issue date . The phrase shown translates to freedom, equality, and fraternity, popular during the French Revolution against Louis XVI.
French Rooster 20 Franc Gold Coin Minting – Original production of the French Rooster 20 Franc gold coin took place 1898-1914. Surviving coins from the first year are considered extremely rare. Coins with dates 1907-1914 were re-struck at the Paris Mint in 1921, and again 1951-1960.
