French Napoleon III 20 Franc Gold Coin Design – The French Napoleon III 20 Franc Gold Coin was subject to three different style designs during production 1852-1870.
Napoleon III Style I – The front side of the style one coin features a bust portrait of Napoleon III including the words, “LOUIS-NAPOLEON BONAPARTE” (and no title). The words, “REPUBLIQUE FRANCAISE,” the value of the coin (20 Franc) and the issue date (1852) inscribed on the reverse side of the coin. A wreath encircles the coin.
Napoleon III Style II – The second style of the French Napoleon 20 Franc coin is similar to the first, except name of the ruler is shown on the front side of the coin as “NAPOLEON III,” along with the title, “EMPEREUR.” The nation shows as “EMPIRE FRANCAIS” on the reverse side of the coin.
Napoleon III Style III – The third style of the coin emerged in 1861. It is displayed on the front side of the coin, a coat of arms and a wreath around Napoleon III. Production of this coin ran until his reign ended in 1870.
French Napoleon III 20 Franc Gold Coin Minting – France produced 20 Franc gold coins since Napoleon I’s reign as First Consul. These early coins were dated using ANXI, AN12, AN13, and AN14. Later in 1806 when the design was modified, the coin displayed the date in Arabic Numerals. The French Napoleon III 20 Franc Gold Coins were minted 1852-1870.
