Dating from the 19th century Kingdom of Belgium, the historic Belgian Leopold II 10 Franc Gold Coin features Leopold II, who reigned 1865-1909. Leopold II is remembered as the “Builder King” because he commissioned many new buildings in Brussels, Ostend, and Antwerp. He is also known for hiring famous explorer, Henry Morton Stanley, to colonize the Congo (1876).
Belgian Leopold II 20 Franc Gold Coin Design – The front side of the Belgian 20-Franc features the bare head of King Leopold II including the inscription, “LEOPOLD PREMIER ROI DES BELGES.” The first style for this coin was issued 1867-1870, while a second type was issued 1870-1882 (coins dated 1870 could be of either style.) The second style shows a redesigned portrait of King Leopold II in which he bears a slightly longer beard, a different shape at the neckline, and other subtle differences such as larger lettering and numerals for the date. The reverse side of the coin features the Belgian coat of arms, a crowed lion inside a circular shield, and the inscription, “L’UNION FAIT LA FORCE, 20 FR.”
Belgian Leopold II 20 Franc Gold Coin Minting – The Belgium Leopold II 20 Franc Gold Coin is identical in size and weight as the popular France 20 Franc Angel.
