Austrian 1 Ducat

The gold Austrian Ducat was used as a trade coin in Europe from the late Middle Ages until the late 20 th Century. The Ducat was used as a model as rulers reformed their currencies. Austria continued to produce ducats until 1915 and has continued to restrike the last of them including some four ducat coins. Around 1913 the gold ducat was equivalent to nine shillings and four pence sterling, or a little more than two dollars. As banks sell the ducats to private coin collectors and investors some of the national mints produce batches of ducats from the old patterns. The front side of the coin depicts Emperor Franz Joseph, an Austro-Hungarian ruler who had reigned for a monarch the longest in modern history.
